Ajax Spartans Rep. Midget Semi-Finalist at EOBA Championship

Ajax Spartans Midget Team competed in the EOBA championship this past weekend and made it to the Semi-Finals.

The tournament started on Friday night with Ajax Spartans coming up against our conference champions Peterborough.

The Spartans put up a good fight but lost 5:0 to the star-studded Peterborough team.

The second game was against Pickering and the Spartans came with great determination and won 5:1. We had great pitching from Stuart Martin who went the distance with one hit and a zero ERA for the win. Our next game was against the Provincial elimination Semi-Finalist Clarington Orioles. Here the Spartans came out strong and determine to make a statement, went on to beat the orioles 7:3. We had another good pitching performance this time by Harley Whitehurst who pitch into the 7 inning for the win. Also we had  timely hitting from the entire team which propelled us into the Semi-Finals. The Spartan came up against Peterborough in the Semi-Final and lost 9:3 to the eventual championship winner . While we played great baseball all weekend, we were no match for our conference and championship winner Peterborough Midget.

Ajax Spartans Midget Select Team Wins at Southwest London SOBA Tournament, July 25-27/14

Ajax Midget Select Team went to the Southwest London SOBA Tournament with one goal in mind, come home champions and this is exactly what they did. The teams determination, along with great pitching, stellar defense and timely hitting, all came together this past weekend leading to this goal.

On the Friday night, Ajax opened against EBBA Kings from Dorchester and came away with a four inning, 10- 0 mercy game.

On the Saturday, Ajax was up early to play South West London with another win of 7-2. Next up, the Pickering Red Sox and once again Ajax came away with a 7-2 win making the team undefeated going into the semifinals.

On Sunday, Ajax was quick out of the gate in the semis against the Pickering Red Sox jumping to a 5-0 lead after four innings, but Pickering came away in the bottom of the inning with 3 of their own making it tight, before Ajax pulled away and won 11-5 placing Ajax in the finals against the Aurora Jays.  The final game was a back and forth affair, but the Team was determined to achieve the goal we set forth from the start, they dug in with big hits and shut down defense, lead again by strong pitching, the outcome was a 15-8 win for Ajax with a record of 5-0.

Awesome weekend  to all the boys on the Ajax Midget Select Team, well deserved.

A must read and tell....... Ajax Spartans Minor Peewee Rep Baseball Team comes home with Championship Trophy from MAJOR US Tournmanet held outside of Cooperstown NY.

Hello there everyone,

I’ll quickly introduce myself as Sacha Mandarich, a parent volunteer working as an Assistant Coach & Team Manager for the 2002 Ajax Spartans Minor Peewee Rep Baseball Team.

Like every other Team Manager I find I’m usually writing emails to update parents on schedules, games, fundraising, practices, etc etc.

Otherwise it’s dealing with our League on administrative matters.

Today I’m writing this email to share with all of you what I find to be a great heartwarming story from the world of Kids Baseball.

Our Team is comprised of 13 Boys born in 2002, ranging in ages from 11 to 12, and 4 Coaches. Though this group of boys is not a spectacular team by any stretch of the imagination, they managed to head down to Cooperstown AllStar Village (CASV) AND ARE THE FIRST TEAM IN DURHAM AND THE GTA TO BRING HOME THE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY!!!!!!

To put this in perspective, CASV runs week long 12U tournaments starting in June, and they finish up at the end of August, (about 12 weeks of Tournaments).

Each week sees 32+ new teams from all over the world, but most are Elite American Teams.  Furthermore, American age restrictions for Baseball are different than ours. A 12U tournament means you must have been 12 years old as of April 30th of this year.  This meant that all of our competition was much bigger and stronger as teams were comprised of mostly 12 and 13 year olds.  Here are the recent Rankings for the top 25 American Teams.  http://www.baseballyouth.com/rankings

Our Boys attended “Week 4” which ran from June 29th to July 4th. This was a great week as we were the only Non-American team and were able to celebrate Canada Day while we were there.  The hospitality was top notch, and the Coaches, Players, and Parents from the other Teams were nothing but amazing with our group.

In the end, we did finish dead last, but looking at our kids you wouldn’t be able to tell.  The kids had an absolute blast as the team bunked together, players & coaches only, for 6 days in the Players Village.  Swimming and Pin Trading with other teams was always a fun time between games.

The true Champions of Week 4, in more ways than one, were the VSA Vipers from California.  From the baseballyouth rankings you will see they are ranked 6th amongst all American 12u teams, which is amazing.

It wasn’t until after the closing ceremonies on our last night, with the boys spending the rest of their American money in the arcade, that our world was turned upside down.

Our head coach was taking some kids back to the bunkhouse, when we found the 5+ foot tall Championship Trophy in our bunkhouse.  The following note was left behind with the trophy:

Ajax Spartans

Congratulations. Hope you guys enjoyed yourselves.  Please accept this trophy from us in recognition for all of your efforts.  Class act. Best of luck.

VSA Vipers

Reading this note again brings me close to tears. So I wanted to share this experience with all of you.

We have yet to play as a team since returning this past weekend.  This is going to happen tomorrow, Wednesday July 9th @ Miller Park South in Ajax, 6pm game time.

We are going to bring the trophy to the diamond in order to get a team picture taken.  I’m hoping to see that Durham Region news can make it for a photo and quick write up as this is a real story of true sportsmanship and class that must be shared.

Mosquito Spartans Win Woodstock Tournament

Recently, the Spartans went Woodstock and came homechampions.  Strong pitching, timely hitting, amazing defenseand a never give up attitude, all led to a successful weekend.  On Friday night, the Spartans defeated the Brantford Red Sox 14 –4.  Saturday morning the Spartans defeated the Mitchell Astros,9-6.  Later in the day, the Spartans lost 5-4 to the WoodstockWanglers.  The Spartans, seeded second, advanced to the semifinals to play the Guelph Royals.  The Royals jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after 3 innings and it looked to be over.  A keybases clearing double began the comeback in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Strong pitching, shut the Royals bats down and led tothe come from behind 8-7 win.  In the finals, the Spartans faced the Tillsonburg Otters.  Once again, the Spartans fell behind 8-2, however, the cardiac kids mounted yet another comeback which culminated in a 7 run, 6th inning and led to the 13 – 8 victory.  It was clear all the hard work the boys have been putting in is paying off.  Congratulation boys!
