PICKERING-AJAX CUBS MINOR BANTAM ARE AAA PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS
The Pickering-Ajax Cubs Minor Bantam AAA Baseball Team captured the Provincial Championship on Labour Day Weekend.
Despite a strong regular season, the team struggled during tournaments throughout the season. The team relied heavily on strong defense and pitching as their hitting was a weakness. However, on this final weekend during the biggest tournament of the season, it all came together as the bats came alive throughout the batting order, the defense remained stingy and some great pitching performances sealed the deal.
The Team went 5-1 during the double knockout tournament and outscored their opponents by a total score of 62-28 over the 6 games played.
The tournament opened up on Friday August 30 against the defending champions, Mississauga North Tigers. The Cubs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and held on to win the game 8-2. In the second game, the Cubs went down to defeat against the Burlington Bulls 12-4. The next two games were played on Saturday August 31 and the Cubs bats were sizzling all day long as they defeated the Windsor Stars 19-2 and then the London Badgers 15-3.
In the semi-final game, the Cubs were up against the always tough Etobicoke Rangers. Another quick start had the Cubs out in front 8-0 after 3 innings and they were able to snuff a late rally by the Rangers for an 8-6 victory. The victory earned the Cubs a berth into the Finals against the Etobicoke Rangers once again. The Cubs bats remained hot as they scored 4 runs in the first inning. A few more insurance runs, great defensive plays and great pitching catapulted the Cubs to an 8-3 victory in the final game and earned them the 2013 “AAA” Minor Bantam Provincial Championship.
The Cubs team is coached by Scott Robinson, Chris Papalia, Brock Robinson. Team members consist of Kurt Dawkins, James De Sousa, RJ Dutkiewicz, Jared Evans, Jonathan Henry, Matthew Hunter, Alex Jones, Neelesh Kaul, Dylan Latty, Landon Leach, Liam Miller-North, Kevin Stiles and Harrison Toms.
Select Baseball is back in AjaxOn June 22, the Ajax Spartans Peewee Select team headed to Hamilton for their first tournament of the summer. Since this is the first year that Ajax has had a select program in many many years, this was many of the players' first experience at such an event. While we unfortunately lost our first 2 games, we were able to win the 3rd game on that sweltering hot day, which was enough to put us into the Bronze medal game on Sunday morning.
The team got progressively better after each game during the tournament, and that also held true on the Sunday where we defeated Brantford 12-2 to win the Bronze medal. A great finish to a great weekend.
There was certainly one thing that was undisputed.... we were the best looking team there! Those uniforms are SHARP .....
Congratulations boys!! Great job!!
Your coaching staff.

The Spartans had a few ups and downs during round robin play, but made it through the round robin undefeated. Saturday evening the team spent at Comerica Park watching the Detroit Tigers versus the Philadelphia Phillies.
In the semi-finals the Ajax Spartans faced some stiff competition from Huron Valley Rebels. This was a tremendous see-saw battle where Ajax Spartans held a three run lead once and the Rebel’s held a three run lead twice in the game, including going into the bottom of the final inning. The Ajax Spartans mounted a four run final inning come-back, that resulted in a walk-off victory for Ajax and moved them into the finals against the only other undefeated team in the tournament.
The finals saw the Monroe Mustangs jump out to a five run first inning lead. The Ajax Spartans chipped away at the lead but never took hold of the lead. The final game finished up a 7-4.
